How To Nail Cedar Shingle Siding

I have done a few cedar shingle jobs all siding and it works pretty well.

I use a bostitch coil siding nailer. For an exterior corner nail one shingle flush with the corner edge of the sheathing. Place nail just above the overlap. Nail one of the shingles to the sheathing so it extends to the line then use a level to install the rest of the shingles in that row with their ends flush with each other.

The same fastener location guidelines should be followed for staples as for nails. Manufacturers recommend a 1 1 4 inch 3d box or shingle nail for new construction and a 1 3 4 inch 5d nail when going over another siding material. The shingle meeting it from the other side will overlap this one. Ideal nails to use on cedar wood are made from aluminum double dipped galvanized or stainless steel.

The staples should also have a minimum crown width of 7 16 inch and should be long enough to penetrate the sheathing 3 4 inch or all the way through. Drive nails flush with the surface. Step 5 attach the shingles with 1 inch roofing nails. A stapler is used most often because it is less likely to split the shingles.

Both exterior and interior corners are handled in essentially the same manner. The last cedar siding job i did i used about 17 000 nails. The type of nails you choose to use when installing cedar shake siding should be considered also. Even if you are shingling just a single wall renting power equipment will be worth the cost.

You can hand nail shingles but the job goes faster with a pneumatic nailer or stapler. And you will use a ridiculous amount of nails. Apply both nails 3 4 inches from the edge of each shake or shingle and about 1 1 2 inches above the exposure line. Nails should be long enough to penetrate underlying materials in the cedar shingles at least 3 4 inches or all the way through.

2 inches above the butt line and 3 4 inch in from each edge. White cedar shingles are nailed 1 1 2 inch above the butt line and 3 4 inch in from each end. Use two fasteners to apply each certi label shingle or shake. Extend this row of shingles around the house using the level to keep the bottom edge horizontal.

I always used stainless steel ring shank nails i believe they were about 1 1 2 long for siding. Bevel siding should be face nailed to studs with 1 1 4 inch penetration into solid wood using one nail per piece spaced at a maximum of 24 inches on center.
