If you don t have a secure point such as a tow hook you can install a hood loop strap to create one. Open the front and rear doors of your vehicle and pass one set of the ratchet straps over the front of the kayak. The easiest way to strap your kayaks onto j racks is from the side of your vehicle. Tie the straps down with cam buckles to secure the kayak.

Bring the strap assemblies over the kayak and feed them through the bottom of the carrier or around the roof rack cross bar. Run 2 boat straps over the top of the kayak and them under the roof rack bars then bring the straps to the other side of the kayak and loop them under the roof rack bars on that side. Then it locks securely in place on top of the car. Attach the cam to one loop wrap one full time around the nose of the kayak and then secure to the other loop with a trucker s hitch or something similar.

If you re smart you can actually set your straps in place before loading your kayaks on. This will depend on the model of j style rack being used. If using a strap with a hook attach the hook at a secure point on your vehicle. Never attach the tie down straps to plastic parts on your car.

In place of a long cam strap rope or twine will work here. Attach the other end of the line to a secure point on your vehicle. Hook the end of the line with the ratchet to a secure point on the front of the kayak such as the grab handle. To tie down a kayak place it right side up on your roof rack and center it.

Once you ve loaded the boat just lift the kayak or sup and the roof rack will retract with it. If using a bow stern strap with an anchor loop run the strap through the loop then bring the strap through the buckle and secure. Tie on with a bowline tie off with a hitch.
